Blooming in late May in my neighborhood are the Oakleaf Hydrangeas ( Hydrangea quercifolia,)
Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica,)
the very fragrant Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides,)
Anigozanthus or Kangaroo Paws,
Aeonium arboreum with the black leaves,
and the very tall Acanthus mollis, native to the Mediterranean whose leaves are carved in the capital of the Greek Corinthian column.
The flowers have four stamens curled up under its sepal.
